CNC Milling & Horizontal Broaching of a Grey Iron Casting
At Illinois Broaching Co., Inc., we’ve accumulated a great deal of practical machining experience in our 65 years, including the capability of providing multiple machining techniques on large parts. A customer asked us to machine a milled and broached railroad crossing gate arm made from a gray iron casting measuring 24" x 49".
Using a CNC mill, our team of highly skilled machinists milled the face, drilled the required holes and broached the spline according to the customer-supplied print. Functional verifications were also performed to ensure the arm mechanism would open and close correctly. Proper operation required that the spline orientation be held to 1/2° to ensure proper mesh.
Dimensional integrity is maintained by randomly inspecting two pieces every hour for quality control. This railroad arm is manufactured in lots of 200, delivered to this Chicago customer with lead times of 10 working days.
