Project: Broaching of a Steel Shaft
Industry: Agricultural Industry

Because of our highly specialized skills and reputation for executing precision work, Illinois Broaching Co., Inc. was contracted by a customer in the agricultural industry to fabricate these steel shafts for use in picking/planting equipment. For this part we recommended using 1045 steel, because its properties enhance machined characteristics such as size accuracy, straightness, and concentricity. These features made it the perfect choice for minimizing wear in a high speed application. Primary manufacturing operations consisted of turning and broaching the curves and flats, then deburring the piece to a smooth, defect-free finish. Carefully performed quality inspections revealed that this 0.8108-0.8114″ O.D. by 8 5/8″ long part was fabricated to within precision ±.005″ tolerances.

We manufactured this shaft in quantities of 10,000 per order for our very satisfied customer in Wisconsin. For more information about this project or to learn how our expert broaching and machining services can improve the quality of your steel parts, contact us today.
